Damaged shingles
Broken or displaced shingles are removed so replacements can be fastened and woven into the adjacent courses. If nearby shingles crumble during access, the repair may need a larger boundary than the visible damage suggests.

An indoor stain marks where water became visible. It may not mark the opening above it. Water can travel along sheathing or framing before it reaches the ceiling, so patching the shingles directly over the stain can miss the source.
The inspection follows the roof slope and nearby intersections. Pipe boots, wall flashing, valley edges and disturbed shingles deserve attention along with the visible damage. A roofer also checks whether the surrounding covering can be lifted and resealed without breaking.

A lasting repair restores the way the original layers move water.

A split boot or failed metal detail needs a compatible replacement or reconstruction. Flashing should overlap in the direction water travels and integrate with the covering and adjacent wall, rather than depend on exposed caulk alone.
Wet or weakened wood cannot provide a reliable fastening base. Removal can reveal damage that was hidden during the first inspection; that changes the repair area and the materials needed.
The repair boundary has to end in roof material that can still do its job.
An isolated failure with sound surrounding shingles, firm decking and a workable flashing connection can be a good repair candidate. A color match may be imperfect as older shingles weather, but the water-shedding detail still has to be complete.
Leaks across several slopes, widespread cracking or repeated failed patches point to a wider condition. Replacement may be more practical when each new repair requires disturbing material that cannot be reused.
The number of damaged shingles is only part of the price. Steepness, roof height, access to a wall or chimney, the need to remove surrounding materials and concealed wood damage all affect the work.
A small opening can require careful dismantling of a larger area to rebuild the overlaps correctly. That is why a roof-specific scope is more useful than a price based only on the size of the stain.

Sealant can be part of a compatible detail or temporary protection. It does not rebuild deteriorated flashing, replace a split boot or restore weakened decking. The repair depends on what failed.
Keep people away from sagging ceilings and wet electrical fittings. If it is safe, move belongings and contain drips. Call with the active-leak concern and stay off the roof.
Yes. Weathering and discontinued products can affect the match. The repair must still use a suitable product and integrate correctly with the existing courses.
